The 40 yard container in Dothan
The 40 yard is the largest roll-off container we offer, built for projects that generate high volumes of bulky debris and for cutting the downtime of multiple pickups and container swaps. Commercial construction and renovations, demolition projects, full-property remodels, warehouse and office cleanouts, large roofing jobs, multi-property cleanouts and large event cleanups — that is where it lives. It holds about 40 cubic yards, roughly twelve pickup truck loads, or about 230 to 250 standard 33-gallon bags.
It is bulky and mixed debris that justifies the 40: drywall, lumber, framing, siding, cabinets, fixtures, shelving, pallets, packaging and office debris. Concrete, brick, dirt and asphalt can reach transportation weight limits quickly, so for extremely heavy debris a smaller dumpster or a split-load arrangement is usually more efficient and cost-effective. The footprint is the same 22 by 7.5 feet as a 20 or 30, but at eight feet tall it is usually loaded by a crew.
Space needed
a flat, solid spot about 22 feet long and 7.5 feet wide on a lot or job site (pavement, gravel or a construction pad, not grass), about 60 feet of clear approach for the roll-off truck, and clear space overhead, free of low tree branches and power lines
Construction, demolition and big commercial jobs
Contractors, developers and commercial property managers are the regular 40 yard customers: commercial renovations with drywall, fixtures, shelving and framing, demolition projects with mixed debris, lumber and siding, full-property remodels, warehouse and office cleanouts with pallets, packaging and office furniture, and large event cleanups with temporary structures and bulk waste. The local rules point the same way. In Dothan, the City does not collect refuse from nonresidential establishments — the owner or producer removes it (City Code § 82-36(a)) — and building material from construction or demolition, and any trash from work done by a contractor, is the owner's or producer's to remove (§ 82-20(h)). In Headland, the City's building permit forms say the dumpster must be on the job site and the site kept clean daily.
Demolition comes with its own steps. ADEM wants a 10-day notification before any demolition, with or without asbestos, and asbestos never goes in a roll-off. Regulated hazardous waste may not go to an ordinary non-hazardous landfill (ADEM 335-13-4-.21(1)(h)), free liquids are barred at construction and demolition landfills (335-13-4-.23), and every permitted landfill screens loads for free liquids, regulated hazardous and medical waste and PCB waste (335-13-4-.21(1)(b)). On the road, every load is covered: Alabama requires trucks hauling garbage and rubbish to be covered, secured or sealed so nothing is lost on the way (Code of Ala. § 22-27-3(f)), and Dothan wants solid-waste loads covered or tarped (City Code § 82-112).
Access and placement for a 40 yard
The truck needs about 60 feet of approach space, a solid surface such as a paved lot, a gravel pad or a construction site, and clear space overhead, free of low tree branches and power lines. On a job site we place it where the crews can work around it. A 40 in a public way is a different question. Dothan's code makes it unlawful to put boxes, rubbish or any other article on a sidewalk, street, alley or public way where it may obstruct it, unless it is there under a valid permit from the City (City Code § 86-1), and putting trash, limbs or debris of any kind on a street takes a written permit from the City Engineer or the Public Works Director first (§ 86-8). We found no City permit written for dumpsters or roll-offs, and no fee, time limit or lighting rule, so call Public Works at (334) 615-4420, or ask us, before anything goes in the street. Ross Clark Circle is the City's through route for commercial vehicles, and trucks leave a truck route only to deliver or load, by the most direct route (City Code § 98-129). Ross Clark Circle, US-231, US-84, US-431, AL-52 and AL-53 are state routes, where ALDOT prohibits any use of the right-of-way other than normal traffic without its written permission and has no container permit, so a 40 never sits there. Elsewhere, Enterprise wants a written permit from the City — the code says the mayor issues it — before anything goes in a street, kept on your side of the center line with safeguards and red lights at night (Enterprise Code § 18-30), and Ozark and Abbeville bar street obstructions outright (Ozark § 16-1, Abbeville § 46-2). Each town page says what that town asks for.
Suitability
Is the 40 yard the right size for you?
Rough working figures. Weight, not volume, is what usually decides.
Choose the 40 yard for
- Commercial construction and renovations
- Demolition projects with mixed debris
- Full-property remodels
- Warehouse, office and multi-property cleanouts
- Large roofing jobs and large event cleanups
Pick a different size for
- Heavy-only loads — concrete, dirt, brick and asphalt go in a 10 or 15
- Small jobs (you would pay for unused space)
- Sites without truck access and overhead clearance
- Asbestos, paint, solvents, fuel, tires, batteries, medical waste or appliances still holding refrigerant
Placing a 40 yard container in Dothan
It needs a flat, solid spot about 22 feet long and 7.5 feet wide on a lot or job site (pavement, gravel or a construction pad, not grass), about 60 feet of clear approach for the roll-off truck, and clear space overhead, free of low tree branches and power lines. The driveway comes first. In Dothan we found no City rule for a temporary roll-off on your own driveway or lot — keep it off the sidewalk and the street. The roll-off truck itself may not park on a residential street except while it is loading or unloading (§ 98-91). Ross Clark Circle, US-231, US-84, US-431, AL-52 and AL-53 are state routes, where ALDOT prohibits any use of the right-of-way other than normal traffic without its written permission and has no container permit, so the box stays on the property. Other towns have their own rules — Enterprise wants a written permit from the City for anything in a street, with red lights at night (§ 18-30), Ozark and Abbeville bar street obstructions outright, and Headland's building permits want the dumpster on the job site. Check your HOA too. Protective boards can go under the container on request. Each town page covers its own rules.

Answers
40 Yard Dumpster — questions we get asked
Will a 40 yard dumpster fit on a residential property?
Its footprint is the same as a 20 or 30 — about 22 by 7.5 feet — so it can, but at eight feet tall it is a lot of box for a house. For most homes a 30, or a 20 with swaps, is the better fit. Ask and we will say which.
How do you load a 40 yard?
Usually with a crew. The walls are about eight feet high, so hand loading from the ground is slow. Load evenly across the container and keep debris below the top edge for safe transport.
Can I put concrete in a 40 yard?
Within the weight limit, yes — but not as the main load. Most rentals include about five to six tons, and concrete, dirt, brick or asphalt reach that at a fraction of the volume. For heavy material, a 10 or 15 yard, or a split-load arrangement, is safer and more efficient.
Do you offer swaps on long jobs?
Yes. We can schedule additional containers or recurring swap-outs for ongoing projects, and contractors and commercial customers can ask about job-site scheduling and project support. Tell us the expected duration and we will quote the whole job.
