The 20 yard container in Dothan

When somebody calls and is not sure, the 20 yard is where we often end up — it is one of the most popular sizes we run, because it balances capacity, affordability and convenient placement. For many residential and contractor projects around Dothan it is the all-purpose box: a whole-home cleanout, a multi-room renovation, a roof, a large landscaping job or light demolition, without being so tall that loading becomes a chore. It holds about 20 cubic yards, roughly six pickup truck loads, or about 110 to 130 standard 33-gallon bags.

It is about 22 feet long and 7.5 feet wide, which is the thing to check: that is most of a two-car driveway. It fits comfortably on many residential driveways throughout Dothan, and the 4.5-foot sides keep it easy to load by hand. It is also one of the most popular same-day sizes.

Space needed

a flat, solid spot about 22 feet long and 7.5 feet wide (a driveway, gravel pad or paved area, not the lawn), about 60 feet of clear approach for the roll-off truck, and clear space overhead, free of low branches and utility lines

Renovations, roofs, whole-home cleanouts

Furniture, boxes and household junk from a whole house; drywall, lumber, cabinets, countertops and flooring from a multi-room remodel; shingles and underlayment off a roof; branches, brush and shrubs from a big landscaping job; doors, framing, windows and wood debris from light demolition — these are 20 yard jobs. Roofing is where the 10 and the 20 are the popular choices, and shingles are heavy, so tell us about the roof and we help estimate the weight before delivery.

Alabama sorts the remodel part of that load by what it is. Under ADEM's solid waste rules, construction and demolition waste means the building materials, packaging and rubble from construction, remodeling, repair or demolition — masonry, sheet rock, roofing waste, insulation other than asbestos, scrap metal and wood products — while uncontaminated concrete, soil, brick, rock and waste asphalt paving are left out of that definition (ADEM 335-13-1-.03(30)). If more than half of your debris is concrete, dirt, brick, tile or plaster, a 10 yard is usually more efficient because of weight.

What the 20 yard includes

Transparent flat-rate pricing that typically includes delivery, pickup, disposal fees, the included weight allowance of about three to four tons — about 6,000 to 8,000 pounds — and the standard rental period, typically 3 to 7 days. The price itself depends on the delivery location, the debris type, the disposal weight, the rental duration and any swap-outs, and you get it before delivery, with no hidden charges or surprise fees. Dense materials can reach the weight limit before the dumpster is full, so plan by weight as well as volume, load evenly, keep everything level with the top edge, and separate heavy materials whenever possible. Protective boards can be used beneath the container on request.

Suitability

Is the 20 yard the right size for you?

Rough working figures. Weight, not volume, is what usually decides.

Choose the 20 yard for

  • Whole-home cleanouts
  • Kitchen, bath and multi-room renovations
  • Roofing projects — shingles and underlayment
  • Larger landscaping jobs — branches, brush and shrubs
  • Light demolition — doors, framing, windows and wood

Pick a different size for

  • Mostly concrete, dirt, brick, tile or plaster (a 10 handles the weight better)
  • Major construction and demolition — that is a 30 or 40
  • Driveways without about 22 feet of clear length plus room for the truck
  • Asbestos, paint, solvents, fuel, tires, batteries, medical waste or appliances still holding refrigerant

Placing a 20 yard container in Dothan

It needs a flat, solid spot about 22 feet long and 7.5 feet wide (a driveway, gravel pad or paved area, not the lawn), about 60 feet of clear approach for the roll-off truck, and clear space overhead, free of low branches and utility lines. The driveway comes first. In Dothan we found no City rule for a temporary roll-off on your own driveway or lot — keep it off the sidewalk and the street. Dothan's code makes it unlawful to put boxes, rubbish or any other article on a sidewalk, street, alley or public way where it may obstruct it, unless it is there under a valid permit from the City (City Code § 86-1), and putting trash, limbs or debris of any kind on a street takes a written permit from the City Engineer or the Public Works Director first (§ 86-8). We found no City permit written for dumpsters or roll-offs, and no fee, time limit or lighting rule, so call Public Works at (334) 615-4420, or ask us, before anything goes in the street. The roll-off truck itself may not park on a residential street except while it is loading or unloading (§ 98-91). Ross Clark Circle, US-231, US-84, US-431, AL-52 and AL-53 are state routes, where ALDOT prohibits any use of the right-of-way other than normal traffic without its written permission and has no container permit, so the box stays on the property. Other towns have their own rules — Enterprise wants a written permit from the City for anything in a street, with red lights at night (§ 18-30), Ozark and Abbeville bar street obstructions outright, and Headland's building permits want the dumpster on the job site. Check your HOA too. Protective boards can go under the container on request. Each town page covers its own rules.

Answers

20 Yard Dumpster — questions we get asked

How many pickup loads is a 20 yard dumpster?

About six, or roughly 110 to 130 standard trash bags. Think of it as a whole house of furniture and junk, or the debris from a multi-room renovation.

Can a 20 yard fit in a Dothan driveway?

In many — it is about 22 feet long and 7.5 feet wide, and the truck needs about 60 feet of clear approach to set it down. Put it on the driveway, a gravel pad or a paved area rather than the lawn. If there is truly no room on the property, remember that in Dothan anything obstructing a street, sidewalk or alley needs a valid permit from the City first (City Code § 86-1), and debris on a street a written permit from the City Engineer or the Public Works Director (§ 86-8). We found no City permit written for dumpsters, so we talk it through with you and Public Works before delivery. Driveway first.

What is the weight limit on a 20 yard?

Most rentals include about three to four tons, depending on the debris type. Shingles, tile, concrete, dirt and wet yard debris are the loads that test it; household junk and remodel debris usually do not.

How long is the rental?

The standard rental period is typically 3 to 7 days, and you can often extend for an additional daily or weekly fee if the job runs on. If it fills early, ask for a swap-out; if you finish early, call and we schedule the pickup sooner.

Can I get a 20 yard the same day?

Often. Same-day or next-day delivery may be available, depending on scheduling and availability, and the 20 yard is one of the most popular same-day sizes. Call before noon for the best chance. The phone is answered around the clock, but we do not promise night or Sunday drop-offs.
