Whether you are clearing out a family home, tackling years of garage clutter or getting a property ready to sell, a full cleanout feels overwhelming before you start. The secret is a plan and a place to put everything: a roll-off in the driveway.

Dragging a cleanout to the curb a pile at a time, or making trip after trip to a disposal site, drains your weekends. Dothan's City pickup takes bulk items such as furniture and appliances, but one pile per residence, at the curb and not in the street, and anything over 50 pounds or 35 gallons is the producer's job (§ 82-20(h)). Outside the city, Houston County's policy does not count household furnishings, carpet or appliances as garbage and charges bulk trash by the load, from a $75 minimum to $225 for a full truck. In Ozark, the City asks anyone cleaning out an entire house to contact Public Works before starting, and charges $65.00 per half load over 10 cubic yards of residential trash. A roll-off in the driveway changes the rhythm: you work continuously, toss as you go, and we haul it away in one pickup.
For a garage or single-room cleanout, a 10 is often enough; a 15 yard handles garage, attic and basement cleanups and multi-room cleanouts, and is great for moving or estate cleanouts. A whole-home cleanout is usually a 20 yard, which handles bulky items and high debris volume, or a 30 yard for estate and move-out cleanouts with a lot of furniture, mattresses, boxes and junk. Warehouse, office and multi-property cleanouts can call for a 40. Furniture is bulky and light, so volume usually decides a cleanout before weight does. The sizing guide has the full table.
Walk the house first and list the spaces you are tackling. Then run every item through four piles, keep, donate, drop-off and toss, before anything goes in the bin. The drop-off pile is the one that keeps the load clean: paint and solvents, oils and fuels, tires, batteries, propane tanks and gas cylinders, hazardous chemicals and fridges with refrigerant cannot go in the box, TVs and computers are ask-first, and yard waste goes as its own load. Having the container on site makes the toss decision fast, because there is no pile of maybe items building up in the yard. Finish one space before moving to the next, starting with the one that bothers you most, often the garage.
Standard rentals generally run 3 to 7 days, which covers most single-house cleanouts, and your quote confirms the days. Need longer? We can often extend the rental for an additional daily or weekly fee, depending on availability, or swap a full box for an empty one. Finish early and we can arrange pickup sooner. You do not need to be home for delivery or pickup, as long as we have clear instructions on where the dumpster goes and the area is clear, which helps when you are clearing a family member's home from out of town.
A roll-off also keeps the pile off the lawn while you work, which some towns care about. Ashford bars storing solid waste or bulky waste outside for more than seven days (Ord. 2026-001 § 4D), Newton bans the open storage of building material and building rubbish on residential property, and Gordon's nuisance ordinance bars letting trash and rubbish pile up (Ord. 2014-2). Toss straight into the box and the problem never starts.
Most household cleanout material is fine for a roll-off: furniture of every kind, mattresses, boxes and general junk, old flooring and carpet, cabinets, small non-hazardous appliances, cardboard kept flat and together, and yard waste as its own load. On the rules we read, Alabama has no landfill ban on mattresses or furniture. Load smart: break down bulky items, distribute the weight evenly rather than piling it at one end, fill the gaps with smaller pieces, and keep the load level with or below the top edge so it can be safely hauled. If the cleanout turns into a remodel, with cabinets coming off the walls or flooring coming up, tell us, because household junk and construction debris are different loads.
A few things turn up in every cleanout that cannot go in the box. Fridges, freezers and AC units go in only if the refrigerant has been properly removed; our junk removal service takes appliances with the Freon removed, and Dothan's City pickup takes bulk items such as appliances from homes. TVs and computers are ask-first: the Henry County Landfill takes no electronics, Headland's trash service refuses TVs and monitors, and Ozark's Environmental Services picks up electronic waste. Tires, car batteries and old motor oil are on our no list; the City of Enterprise Public Works shop at 529 Glover Ave takes oil, batteries and tires from City residents (tires for a fee), and Ozark provides a waste oil site for residents (§ 10-31(9)). Paint, cleaners and pesticides stay out too, and we found no public household hazardous waste program in Dothan or the surrounding counties, so keep them out of the box and out of City carts (§ 82-37). Propane tanks are on our no list, and Houston County will not collect them. Usable furniture and household items can be donated, and our junk removal team looks for donation and recycling options whenever possible. The what-goes-in guide has the full list.
The driveway is the spot. We found no City of Dothan permit or rule for a temporary roll-off on private property. A driveway, gravel area or pavement works best, and boards can go under the contact points if you ask when you book. If your home is in an HOA, its rules can limit how long a dumpster stays visible or where it sits, so check before delivery day and let us know about any tight access.
The street is a different matter. In Dothan, boxes, rubbish and other articles may not sit on a street, sidewalk or alley unless under a valid permit from the city (§ 86-1), so we plan on the driveway. Enterprise needs the mayor's written permit for a street spot, with red lights at night (§ 18-30), and Ozark (§ 16-1) and Abbeville (§ 46-2) ban street obstructions. On state highways such as Ross Clark Circle and US-231, ALDOT has no container permit. A few towns have their own collection rules: in Ozark, Enterprise, Ashford and Hartford we check the City's rules before booking. The permit guide has every town we list.
Give us a flat, solid spot with about 60 feet of space for the truck and no low branches or wires overhead, move cars, trailers and bins out of the way, and clearly mark the placement spot if you will not be there. Near homes we plan drop-offs and pickups for the daytime and do not promise night or Sunday service. If you would rather not lift a thing, ask about our junk removal service, where our crew handles the loading, hauling and disposal, priced on the volume, the labor, the type of materials and how accessible the items are. Call (334) 686-0763 — the phone is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week — and ask about same-day delivery if the cleanout is already under way: we offer same-day and next-day delivery in many parts of Dothan and nearby areas, depending on availability.

For a whole-home cleanout, a 20 yard is the usual fit, or a 30 for an estate or move-out cleanout with a lot of furniture. A garage or attic usually needs a 10 or 15. Tell us what the home looks like and we will recommend the right size.
Yes. Furniture, mattresses and household junk can all go in a roll-off; on the rules we read, Alabama has no landfill ban on mattresses. Keep paint, oil, tires, batteries, propane tanks and fridges with refrigerant out.
Small non-hazardous appliances can go in. Fridges, freezers and AC units go in only if the refrigerant has been properly removed, and our junk removal service takes appliances with the Freon removed. Ask first about TVs and computers, because some area landfills refuse electronics.
